Stoke striker Jon Walters explains why his Man United move fell through

A small portion of the headlines on transfer deadline day was devoted to Stoke City striker Jon Walters, as reports grew that he could actually leave the Britannia Stadium.

Sky Sports News tweeted that he had handed in a transfer request as the 6pm deadline loomed, and though it didn’t need saying, Louis van Gaal was most definitely not one of the interested parties.

News quickly emerged that Stoke boss Mark Hughes had rejected his transfer request, citing the 31-year-old as a first team regular.

After five years at Stoke, Walters apparently wanted a move away from the club, but blamed the fact that he wouldn’t be joining Manchester United on…a broken down helicopter?

Making fun of the frantic deadline day culture, Walters kindly apologised to the United boss for ‘letting him down’.
