Lionel Messi rules out move to Premier League

Despite numerous rumours about a switch, Lionel Messi has ruled out a move to the Premier League, as reported by Sky Sports.

During the past weeks and months, there’ve been many news sources in both Spain and England reporting that the Argentinian football legend could consider leaving FC Barcelona, with Manchester City and Chelsea among those to be keen on his services.

Even last year, Spanish football expert Guillaume Blagaue reported that Man City were trying to convince Messi to join them. With the possibility of Pep Guardiola coaching The Citizens, those rumours only became bigger.

But after winning his fifth Ballon d’Or in Zurich, Messi was pretty clear about his future:

“I’ve always said that I can’t leave Barcelona. It’s always my response. I want to finish my career at home and my home is Barcelona,” said Messi. “Football changes so much. A year ago, we were all getting criticised and we ended up winning nearly everything. My intention is to terminate my career where it started, in Barcelona.”

I want to keep succeeding with the club. Now is not the time to think about whether this is my peak. It’s more important that we keep trying to win, that we work hard. It’s a lot to think about.”

Messi has spent his entire career at the Catalan club, winning every trophy imaginable. He’s won the Champions League four times, the Spanish title seven times, the Spanish Cup three times, the Spanish Super Cup six times and the Club World Championship three times.

The Argentinian missed some time this season with a knee injury. He has still managed to score nine goals in 13 league matches, while also providing four assists. Barcelona are currently second in la Liga, two points behind leaders Atletico. But Barca have played one game less than the Madrid club.
