Top 10 Premier League summer transfers of 2015

The winter transfer period is in full effect, but with the Premier League season passed the halfway point, it’s a good time to evaluate the best summer transfers of 2015.

1. Kevin De Bruyne (Man City)

Performance: 5 goals + 9 assists

The Belgian joined City from Wolfsburg for a record £51.8m this summer. He once escaped from Chelsea, but has not disappointed one bit at the Etihad, scoring five goals and recording nine assists. No other new player has been involved in more goals this season than De Bruyne.

2. Georginio Wijnaldum (Newcastle)

Performance: 9 goals + 3 assists

Thank God Newcastle brought in Wijnaldum. The Dutchman joined the Magpies for a transfer fee of only £14 million from PSV Eindhoven, but has been on fire this season. Wijnaldum has scored the most goals by a summer transfer (9), while also recording three assists. If not for him, Newcastle would be in even more trouble.

3. Gerard Deulofeu (Everton)

Performance: 2 goals + 9 assists

Deulofeu didn’t make his Premier League debut this season, as he also appeared for Everton in the 2013/2014 season. But that was on loan from Barcelona, now he’s a true Toffee, joining them on a £4.2 fee. The Spaniard has found a team-mate for a goal on nine occassions. Most of the time, that has been topscorer Romelu Lukaku.

4. Dimitri Payet (West Ham)

Performance: 6 goals + 4 assists

The Hammers landed Payet in a surpise deal last summer, paying £10.5m to Marseille. So far, the Frenchman has been superb for West Ham. In just 15 league matches, Payet has scored six goals and provided four assists. In his seven match absence, the Hammers won just once, proving Payet’s importance to the team.

5. Andre Ayew (Swansea)

Performance: 7 goals + 3 assists

Swansea signing Ayew has been the best value transfer of the summer. The Ghanaian joined the Swans on a free transfer from Marseille en has contributed to ten goals this season: scoring seven and assisting on three. Ayew came in third during the election of African Player of the Year, behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Yaya Toure.

6. Anthony Martial (Man Utd)

Performance: 5 goals + 3 assists

The Red Devils put a sensational £35m on the table to buy Martial from Monaco. He was immediately dubbed “the new Thierry Henry”, putting great pressure on the young Frenchman. But Martial has responded with five goals and three assists for United, often being the lone spark on an otherwise boring team.

7. Christian Benteke (Liverpool)

Performance: 6 goals + 2 assists

It hasn’ been an easy season for Liverpool, just ask Brendan Rodgers. Christian Benteke has had a difficult time adjusting at Anfield after joining the Reds on a £32.5m fee, but still has been of great importance to them. The Belgian has scored six goals so far (including a couple of match winners), while also providing two assists.

8. Roberto Firmino (Liverpool)

Performance: 3 goals + 4 assists

Firmino joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim for a £28.7m fee. The Brazilian started off slowly and had to deal with back issues early on, before settling in at Anfield. He’s benefited from Jurgen Klopp’s system, scoring three goals and providing four assists this season as Liverpool’s primary playmaker.

9. Raheem Sterling (Man City)

Performance: 5 goals + 2 assists

Before De Bruyne, there was Raheem Sterling. The 21-year-old left Liverpool for City on a £43.8m transfer. In 20 league matches, Sterling has recorded five goals and two assists. Maybe not the big bang like everyone expected, but still decent for such a young player on a loaded team upfront.

10. Yohan Cabaye (Crystal Palace)

Performance: 5 goals + 1 assist

Crystal Palace put £9.7m on the table to entice Cabaye from PSG. So far, the Eagles haven’t had any regrets about that summer move. The Frenchman has scored five goals this season, adding one assist as well. Palace are having a very solid season, with Cabaye being their instigator.

Honorable mentions: Aleksandar Mitrovic (Newcastle), James Milner (Liverpool) and Jose Rondon (West Brom).
