Gonzalo Higuain rejected a move to Chelsea after Guus Hiddink was unwilling to guarantee that the current Serie A top scorer would start ahead of Diego Costa, according to The
The Argentina international was approached by club officials during the January transfer window, and the Blues were willing to offer more than £40 million for Higuain’s services.
However, no formal approach was made to Napoli and it is unclear whether the current Serie A leaders would have been willing to sell their top scorer, as Higuain has hit the net 24 times in 24 league matches.
The 28-year-old rejected Chelsea’s approach, as he was expecting to start at Stamford Bridge. But Hiddink wasn’t about to confirm he would bench Costa in favour of the Argentine.
That is unlikely to stop the Blues from going back for Higuain in the summer, with Atletico Madrid reported to be keen on re-signing Costa, their former striker.
The Spaniard scored just three Premier League goals under Jose Mourinho, but rediscovered his form when Guus Hiddink replaced ‘The Special One’ in December. He has hit the net six times under the Dutchman’s watch.
