Premier League classic in Europa League, bad draw for Tottenham

Three English clubs were represented in the Europa League draw for the round of 16, and two of them will face each other, while Tottenham drew Borussia Dortmund.

What a turn of events at Nyon, where the draw took place. Without any country restrictions, all teams could be matched up with each other. For example, Athletic Club de Bilbao was drawn against fellow Primera Division team Valencia, Gary Neville’s squad.

But Liverpool against Manchester United? That’s a draw no one expected. The Reds eliminated German side Augsburg by beating them 1-0 at Anfield, while the Red Devils proved better than Danish side FC Midtjylland by winning 5-1 at Old Trafford.

Both teams will meet for the first time in European competition, with Man United winning both Premier League encounters this season. Louis van Gaal’s side beat the Reds 3-1 at home in September, and took home three points from Anfield after winning 1-0 in January.

Tottenham are considered one of the tournament’s favourites, but will have to play at their best level if they want to qualify for the quarter-finals, facing Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund. Both teams have never faced each other.

The fixtures in the round of 16 will be played on March 10 and 17.
