Once again, Arsenal have come up short in their first title bid since the 2003/2004 season and have been linked with numerous transfer targets.
The Gunners are said to be preparing a bid for Bayern Munich centre-back Mehdi Benatia during the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to a report by The Daily Star, the Moroccan international is about to leave the Bundesliga giants as Borussia Dortmund’s star defender Mats Hummels recently stated he’s leaving the club to join Bayern.
The 29-year-old is a long-term target of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, but has endured two injury-riddled seasons in Germany after joining Bayern in the summer of 2014 from AS Roma for £21 million. Benatia has also been linked with a move back to Italy, with Juventus, Inter, and Roma being interested.
Meanwhile, having secured Champions League football, Villarreal are hopeful they can convince Santi Cazorla to leave Arsenal and return to El Madrigal for a third spell.
The 31-year-old has suffered from a serious knee injury this season, limiting him to just 20 appearances in all competitions. Cazorla also played for Villarreall between 2003 and 2006, and between 2007 and 2011, before joining Malaga and coming to Arsenal in 2012 for £14.25 million.
