Manchester United were all set to sign Benfica midfielder Renato Sanches before Barcelona emerged with a late interest in the Portuguese player.
Earlier this week, multiple reports suggested that the Catalan club consider the 18-year-old as a potential replacement of Sergio Busquets and are ready to compete with United for his signing.
However, according to Portuguese publication A Bola (via Daily Express), the Catalans are helpless in front of the financial might of the Premier League club and have conceded defeat in their pursuit. Sanchez is valued at more than £45 million by Benfica with club president Luis Filipe Vieira demanding £30 million paid upfront.
Barcelona are now expected to turn their attention towards Atletico Nacional’s Sebastian Perez and Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl.
Sanches has emerged as one of the best midfield talents in European football after making his senior debut for Benfica this season. He has made 23 senior league appearances for his club this season. His performances for his club also earned him a call-up for the Portugal national team earlier this year.
