On Tuesday, Liverpool announced the signing of Loris Karius. The 22-year-old German goalkeeper joins the Reds from Bundesliga club Mainz 05 in a £4.7 million deal, according to Liverpool Echo.

Karius signed a five-year deal after completing his medicals at Anfield and will be asked to provide the necessary competition for Simon Mignolet, Liverpool’s current number one between the sticks. The newcomer was also handed the number one shirt by the club.

The former Germany Under-21 international excelled in the Bundesliga over the past four years, keeping 19 clean sheets in 67 games over the past two seasons as he became the starting goalkeeper for Mainz, the team Jurgen Klopp used to play for and manage. He led Mainz to a sixth-place finish this season.

Karius joins Schalke 04’s Joel Matip as a new arrival at Anfield. The 24-year-old defensive midfielder agreed to join Liverpool in February when his contract expires this summer. Meanwhile, Marko Grujic will return from his loan spell at Red Star Belgrade as well.

Manager Jurgen Klopp said Liverpool beat off competition from a number of other clubs to sign Karius, who spent part of his youth career with Manchester City before joining Mainz in 2011.

“I am delighted we have signed Loris, he has had a fantastic season with Mainz and has developed into a very good goalkeeper since his return to Germany,” Klopp said according to Sky Sports.
