Arsenal have made a bid for highly-rated Championship defender

Arsenal are closing in on a move for highly-rated Bolton Wanderers defender Rob Holding, according to the latest rumours on the transfer market.

The 20-year-old was voted Bolton’s player of the year this season, as he was one of the few bright sparks for the Trotters in a season they suffered relegation to the League One.

According to Marc Iles, chief football writer at the Bolton News, Holding was dropped from Bolton’s squad for the 1-0 defeat against Fulham because of a possible bid from the Gunners.

Bolton’s caretaker boss Jimmy Phillips also confirmed that he was asked by the club owners not to play Holding in the season-ending game.

“I was asked by the board of directors not to play him,” he told The Bolton News. “He was in the line-up on Friday morning but that’s as much as I know.

“It would appear some clubs are interested in him somewhere down the line. I think the wheels are still in motion on that one and it’ll be a few days before we get an outcome.”

Holding has progressed through the youth ranks at Bolton and has made 26 league appearances for the club this season. He made his senior debut for the Trotters in August after spending the last part of the previous season on loan at League Two club Bury.

Everton and Bournemouth are also reportedly interested in the player.
