What really happened to Manchester United’s transfer for Renato Sanches?

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich shocked everyone in the football world by announcing the transfer of Renato Sanches from Benfica.

The 18-year-old was first linked with a move to Manchester United in the January transfer window, and a deal was reportedly already in place between all the parties ahead of a summer move.

So what really happened behind the scenes that scuppered Sanches’ move to Old Trafford? Did Bayern gazump United’s move for the player or the Red Devils pulled their hands from the deal?

According to reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, United pulled their hands out of the deal to explore alternate options. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich swopped in to seal the deal for the highly-rated youngster within 48 hours and signed the Portugal international for a reported fee of £27.5 million plus bonuses on a five-year deal.

Meanwhile, The Daily Star and other outlets has an alternate version of the story behind the scenes.

They claim that a United insider has confirmed to them that the Red Devils were never close to signing Sanchez and had ended their interest in the player way back in February, not making a formal offer at Louis Van Gaal’s instruction.

It has also been suggested that United shifted their attention from Sanches to the likes of Andre Gomes from Valencia and will be signing the 22-year-old instead.
