Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has been linked with a move to West Ham United. The Sun, in an exclusive report, has claimed that the 27-year-old forward is set to quit the North London club and is on the verge of joining the Hammers.
Chelsea are also said to be interested in the speedster, but he would prefer a move to West Ham as he will get more playing opportunities in Slaven Bilic’s side.
Walcott joined the Gunners as a 17-year-old in 2006 and has made 231 appearances for the Gunners. He signed a new contract at the start of the current season, but this season has been a watershed moment in his career at the North London club.
He started the season brightly but suffered a terrible dip in his form during the second half of the season. Especially his performance in the 3-2 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford attracted heavy criticisms from club fans.
Manager Arsene Wenger recently admitted that he is not sure about Walcott’s future at the club.
West Ham co-owner David Sullivan confirmed that the hammers have put in a £23.6 million bid for an unknown player and are expected to make a £20 million or £25 million bid for a player in England this week.
He told Sky Sports: “We are hopefully going to bring one or two top players in. The Olympic Stadium gives us about £12 million extra revenue a year, but not £100 million.
“We put in a £23.6 million bid for a player and other bids will be going in. We are going to make a £20 million or £25 million bid for a player in England this week. So whatever happens we’ll bring a top striker in.
“We’re not close enough to either one yet. But transfers always appear first on my son Jack Sullivan’s Twitter account. It’s a statement of intent. We’ll spend between £30 million and £50 million on transfers this summer. But you’ve got to build it up gradually. You can’t compete with the likes of Man Utd overnight.
“We might have to put our own money in – we’ve done it before – but we hope we’re clever enough for the £23.6 million bid.”
It’s highly possible that one of the players Sullivan is talking about is Walcott, with the Hammers also heavily interested in Marseille’s Michy Batshuayi and Lyon right-back Rafael, with the former Manchester United defender seen as a perfect replacement for the departed Carl Jenkinson, according to l’Equipe (via Daily Express).
On top, the Hammers have approached Juventus regarding a summer move for forward Roberto Pereyra, who is available for £12 million, according to Tuttosport (via Daily Mail).
