Jose Mourinho has targeted Aaron Ramsey as a contingency plan should Manchester United not be able to persuade Borussia Dortmund to part with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
According to a report by The Sun, the Red Devils are very much in the hunt for the Armenia international but it remains unclear if the 27-year-old will leave the Bundesliga giants.
Mino Raiola, the player’s agent, remains hopeful that an agreement can be struck with Dortmund after his client signalled his desire to move to Old Trafford. Mkhitaryan has a year left on his contract and has told Dortmund he will not sign a new deal.
Should a transfer fail to materialize, the report claims the Red Devils are looking at Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey. However, United would need to pay £50 million to persuade the Gunners to sell.
The 25-year-old Wales international almost joined the Red Devils after leaving Cardiff in 2008, but he opted to join Arsenal in a £4.8 million deal instead.
Jose Mourinho is attempting to improve his squad after replacing Louis van Gaal. He has already signed Eric Bailly from Villarreal, subject to the Ivorian being granted a work permit and is also expected to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic once the Swede is free of his international commitments at Euro 2016.
