Newcastle United are on the verge of signing goalkeeper Matz Sels from Belgian side KAA Gent, according a report by Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.
The 24-year-old is reportedly set to undergo his medical tests at the club before signing a five-year contract with the Magpies. The transfer fee Newcastle will be paying is currently unknown, but it is said Gent rate their goalkeeper at £5 million.
The Belgian side surprised the football world with a stellar run in the Champions League last season. They were able to qualify for the knock-out stages after finishing second in a group with Zenit St Petersburg, Valencia and Lyon. The Buffalo’s went on to lose to Wolfsburg in the round of 16.
Sels was in the middle of it all, showcasing his talents with a series of great performances. The 24-year-old conceded 57 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions for Gent, keeping 18 clean sheets. He joined the 2015 Belgian champions in 2014 for just £114k from Lierse.
The move to Newcastle comes a bit as a surprise, as Sels will join a team that was relegated from The Premier League last season. However, the Magpies want to secure promotion right away and have the financial power to give manager Rafa Benitez a competitive team.
