Chelsea linked with Euro 2016 star but primed to lose battle

Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Mario, according to the Sun.

The 23-year-old was one of the standout performers for the Portugal national team in their Euro 2016 triumph. He has been linked with Chelsea and Manchester United in the past, and now it seems that the Blues have reignited their interest in the player.

The report suggests that the West London club are contemplating a £46 million bid for the Euro 2016 winner and that Paris Saint-Germain and Internazionale are also said to be keeping tabs on the central midfielder.

The latter ones seem to be Chelsea’s primary rival for Mario. The Serie A giants are reportedly in talks for the 23-year-old midfielder, with new owners Suning apparently having no qualms about the transfer fee being requested and being keen enough to land the player, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Football Italia).

Meanwhile, Mario’s father has hinted his son’s next club is going to be Inter in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

“Inter are a top club, everyone player would like to wear their shirt. The Serie A is also an amazing league with clubs like Juventus, Roma and AC Milan. Joao Mario is ready to play in Italy,” he said (via Calciomercato).
