Championship club Reading have been linked with an audacious move for former Real Madrid and Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart.
The veteran midfielder, who is currently signed to La Liga side Real Betis, is reportedly available in the transfer market after being told by Betis that he has no future with the club.
Get Reading claims that informal discussions have already taken place between the former Dutch international and the Royals, and the player hasn’t ruled out a return to England.
Reading’s newly appointed manager Jaap Stam has been busy rebuilding his squad in the transfer market and aims to achieve promotion to the Premier League in his first season with the club.
The former Manchester United star has previously played with Van der Vaart for the Dutch national team and could play a major role in convincing the 33-year-old to move to the Madejski Stadium.
Van der Vaart still has one year left on his deal with Betis, but he recently confirmed that he is on the lookout
for a new team.
“As everyone knows, they don’t want me there,” he told Fox Sports (via Get Reading). “I’ll go and train and see what happens. If I don’t leave in the end, I want to earn my place in the team.
“I have a trainer in Amsterdam and I’m training hard with him every day. There is contact with other clubs, but nothing concrete.”
