Arsenal linked to another surprise defender as top targets seem unreachable

Arsenal are in the transfer market for a central defender following a long-term injury to Per Mertesacker and have been linked with a number of replacements.

The Gunners reportedly had been offered the chance to seal a £37 million transfer of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, ahead of Chelsea and Everton. However, the Serie A giants have not been keen to selling the Senegalese international and the same proved to be true for AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have had their first bid of £15 million for centre-back Shkodran Mustafi rejected by Valencia, with the La Liga outfit holding out for £21 million to £25 million.

However, according to Goal, the Gunners are expected to present a follow up offer of around £20 million to the Spanish side over the coming days.

In addition, Thomas Vermaelen is free to leave Barcelona this summer but he is unlikely to join former club Arsenal. AS Roma are pushing for the Belgium international, while the Gunners are looking at other options, a report by the Evening Standard claims.

One of those alternatives is Crystal Palace defender Scott Dann. The Daily Mail claim Arsenal have discussed the possibility of signing the 29-year-old, who became a key part of Alan Pardew’s side last season. He’s also on Everton’s transfer radar, but it seems the Eagles are unlikely to sell Dann.

Meanwhile, the rumours linking West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans to Arsenal are only getting stronger. The Belfast Telegraph claims that the Northern Ireland defender currently leads the list of club’s transfer target, and the Gunners are planning to launch a £15 million bid for him.
