Antonio Conte is desperately looking for a centre-back

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is still desperately looking for a world-class centre-back.

The Italian manager attempted to sign multiple targets during the summer but eventually had to settle with David Luiz on the transfer deadline day.

Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis revealed this week that the Blues made multiple attempts, including a £58m bid, to sign Kalidou Koulibaly last summer.

“They offered to me £30, 35, 40, 45, 50 [million],” De Laurentiis told Sky Sports. “Mr Conte I said, ‘Marina [Granovskaia, Chelsea director] is behind me, follow me’, I offered him that. Last moment, two days before the closing of the market, I hear £58 [million] – something like that.”

It appears that Luiz’s arrival hasn’t resolved Chelsea’s defensive problems and Conte wants to bring one more centre-back in the January transfer window.

According to the Telegraph, Conte wants to sign Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci in January and Chelsea are prepared to break the bank to get the Italian defender.

The report claims that the West London club are prepared to spend up to £60m on the 29-year-old and make him the world’s most expensive defender.

The Sun, a couple of days ago, had claimed that the Turin club are ready to let Bonucci join the Blues for midfielder Cesc Fabregas and £50million in cash.

Bonucci has previously played under Conte for Juventus and the Italy national team.
