Antonio Conte took charge of Chelsea’s first full day of pre-season training at the club’s facilities in Cobham despite uncertainty over his immediate future at the club.
Conte and his entire backroom staff were in place as the first team players began their preparations for next season with reports of Maurizio Sarri replacing his fellow Italian still making the rounds.
Reports in Italy say negotiations between between Napoli and Chelsea over Sarri’s appointment as Conte’s potential replacement are deadlocked.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is waiting for an improved offer from Chelsea and Sarri is not in London, as he waits for the go-ahead. The Italian club begin pre-season on Tuesday, although Sarri will no longer be in charge as De Laurentiis swiftly replaced him with former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti in May.
Conte still has a year to run on his Chelsea contract and will be in place at the west London club until a solution is found to an increasingly bizarre situation.
