It was a case of close but no cigar for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool last season. The Reds were much improved in the Premier League but could only finish third – Liverpool did advance to the Champions League final but fell short against the mighty Real Madrid. Since then, Klopp has spent over £150 million to bolster his squad and lots of fans believe that the Reds are primed to topple Manchester City in the 2018/19 Premier League title race.
Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson will all help Liverpool in their pursuit of glory this season. With the Reds looking to challenge on all four major fronts in 2018/19, there was a clear and obvious need for Klopp to add strength in depth and Liverpool are now well placed to compete for silverware this term. The Anfield faithful will be expecting big things ahead of what could be a memorable season on Merseyside.

Liverpool now boast one of the strongest squads in world football and it would be foolish to write the Reds off ahead of the upcoming campaign. Getting off to the best possible start is the initial objective and Klopp’s side will take some stopping if they build momentum. The two Manchester clubs are still missing some big names from the World Cup 2018 but most of Liverpool’s top stars are now back at Anfield and raring to go.
Klopp has admitted that modern football is heading in a different direction these days and clubs have to spend big in order to challenge for major honours. Liverpool moved quickly and effectively in the transfer window to acquire their targets and Klopp’s men will benefit directly because of that. The Reds are 5/1 with William Hill to win the title this campaign and plenty of punters will be siding with Liverpool after a solid start to pre-season.
Despite their heavy spending, Mohamed Salah remains central to their aspirations. Winner of the Premier League’s Golden Boot award last season, the Egypt forward scored just 52 seconds after coming on as a substitute in Liverpool’s pre-season victory over Manchester City. Another 30-goal campaign should put Klopp’s side right in the mix to lift the Premier League crown in 2018/19.
Keita looks a real talent in the middle of the park and he can be Liverpool’s engine. Without a shadow of a doubt, he is an upgrade on Emre Can and the Reds should profit from his drive and hunger to succeed. The former RB Leipzig star was a hit in Germany’s top flight and he looks well suited to the speed and style of the Premier League. Watch this space, he could be Liverpool’s main difference maker.
Winning the Premier League title has to be the ultimate objective for Jurgen Klopp this year – silverware of any kind is an absolute must. Finishing in the top four is a decent enough achievement but Liverpool need to be winning trophies after spending so much money in the transfer window. This squad is heading in the right direction and the potential to win a first Premier League crown is there; write the Reds off at your peril.
