Ward debut as Wolves players feature in Ireland tie

The versatile Stephen Ward yesterday made his long awaited Republic of Ireland debut, deputising for Mark Wilson in the left back berth that he has held for much of the season at Molineux.

Ward, who has only found the net once in the past four seasons for Wolves, was able to mark his debut with the opening goal – a close range effort after Northern Ireland failed to deal with a Keith Treacy cross. “It was nice to get the win and even better to cap it with a goal on my debut – a good night all round,” Ward told Sky Sports.

“Making my debut was an honour and something I’ve waited for for a long time,” he continued. “I enjoyed every minute of it.” Indeed, Wolves were well represented on the pitch; Kevin Foley, Stephen Hunt and Andy Keogh all played a part in the match for the victors, while Johnny Gorman – a talented academy prospect – started for the ill-fated Northern Irish.
