Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish believes the 2-0 victory over Valencia was the perfect dress rehearsal for next Saturday’s opener against Sunderland, liverpoolfc.tv reports.
The Reds rounded off their pre-season with a well-deserved victory thanks to goals from Andy Carroll and Dirk Kuyt. Liverpool had struggled in their five pre-season fixtures before the Valencia game and had conceded 15 goals in their five games, but they managed to get an important clean sheet on board before next season’s opening Premier League game.
Dalglish said: ‘I think the boys deserve great credit for the work they’ve done out there. They’ve worked hard all week on the organisational side of it. They got their reward for what they did in training by not conceding any goals and that’s as pleasing for us as scoring two at the other end.
‘I hope it’s a dress rehearsal. We worked very hard not to concede and to their credit, they did it. We’ve got a week to get through now, get our work done this week and see what happens next weekend’, Dalglish added.

Duo in England call-up.
New Liverpool signing Stewart Downing and Reds striker Andy Carroll are the only two Liverpool players in Fabio Capello’s new England squad, thefa.com reports.
A thigh injury to Glen Johnson has ruled him out of the squad and allows the right back to prepare for the new season at Liverpool’s training complex. Johnson has been replaced by Manchester City defender Micah Richards, but Johnson is expected to be available for next Saturday’s Premier League opener against Sunderland at Anfield.
26 year old Downing looks set to appear in his 28th England appearance against Holland on Wednesday and his pre-season performances have allowed him to acquaint himself with his new Reds teammates. Carroll goes into the friendly after a good run of form that has seen him score twice in Liverpool’s last two friendlies and he is expected to start for Capello.
Ayala to join Hull.
Daniel Ayala is set to join Championship side Hull City after Liverpool agreed a fee with the Tigers, The Liverpool Echo reports.
The 20 year old Spanish defender made 12 appearances on loan at the KC Stadium last season and has been given permission to discuss personal terms with the Tigers. Ayala signed for Liverpool in 2007 when he was a youth team player, but has only made five first team appearances in his spell on Merseyside. The 20 year old was also sent to Derby County on loan and made 17 appearances for the Rams.
Hull boss Nigel Pearson expressed his desire to bring Ayala back to the KC Stadium and seems to have got his wish after agreeing a fee with the Reds. Ayala will transfer to a Hull City side who lost their opening Championship fixture against Blackpool.
