Liverpool vs Blackburn – Match preview and prediction

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is reacquainted with Blackburn Rovers as the Lancashire club make the trip to Merseyside to take on the Reds at Anfield.

Dalglish led Blackburn to the Premier League title in the 1994/1995 and they won the title at Anfield. The current Liverpool boss is a living legend with the Anfield crowd and he has revitalised the Reds following a poor performance in the early part of last season. Liverpool see the return of midfielder Jay Spearing following a three match suspension and have no fresh injury worries from the fixture with Wigan on Wednesday night. Reds captain Steven Gerrard is back in training, but the Blackburn game is too soon and he is targeted to return in the New Year. Liverpool couldn’t break down Wigan at the DW Stadium in a 0-0 draw, but Dalglish will be pleased with another clean sheet to add to his side’s meanest defensive record in the league.

Blackburn are a far cry away from their title winning exploits of 16 years ago. Steve Kean’s side were beaten on Tuesday night in a crunch game with rivals Bolton at Ewood Park and was subject to protestors outside the ground following the game. Kean has only won seven Premier League victories since taking over a year ago and Blackburn fans are calling for the Scotsman to leave Ewood Park. Blackburn face Manchester United following the Liverpool game and Rovers are desperate for points to avoid relegation to the Championship. Kean has seen Paul Robinson tear a calf muscle, but the goalkeeper is expected to play through the pain. Blackburn have defensive problems with Scott Dann, Ryan Nelsen, Martin Olsson and Gael Givet all injured, so Morten Gamst Pedersen is expected to plug the gap at left-back once again.

Liverpool should comfortably win this one over Dalglish’s former side and keep their push for Champions League qualification alive. Blackburn are in dire straits and the games are not coming easier for Kean with their next home game against Stoke City in the New Year. Rovers fans want Kean gone and these next two games could see the end of Kean’s time in charge.
