Wigan start clearout as Scharner, Figueroa and Joel move on

Relegated Wigan Athletic have started the clearout of playing staff leaving the club. As Metro understands, no fewer than eight players have left the DW Stadium.

Three of these have returned to their parent clubs. Goalkeeper Joel has returned to Atletico Madrid, having previously hinted he wanted to carve out a successful career in his homeland.

Defender Paul Scharner has returned to Hamburg SV and midfielder Angelo Henriquez is back at Manchester United after an unsuccessful loan spell. The FA Cup winners have also decided not to offer deals to five players whose contracts were expiring.

Defender Maynor Figueroa is the main casualty, but the Honduras left back will have no shortage of offers. Steve Bruce wants to take him to Hull City, with West Ham and Liverpool also monitoring the situation. Striker Franco Di Santo, Albert Crusat and injured defender Ronnie Stam will also leave, along with Paraguayan centre-back Antolin Alcaraz.

Manager Roberto Martinez will decide on his next step in the near future, with Everton and Stoke interested in his services.
