Chelsea boss Mourinho hoping for Fulham escape

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that he would like local rivals Fulham to escape relegation this season, BBC Sport has reported.

The two clubs meet at Craven Cottage on Saturday with Chelsea leading the Premier League by a point, and Fulham sitting bottom and four points adrift of safety, having conceded the most goals in the top-flight, 59.

Felix Magath has recently been appointed as Fulham’s new manager as they look to extend their 12-year stay in the Premier League, and on Friday, Mourinho declared that he hoped his German counterpart does manage to keep the Cottagers up, even if it meant for his side to lose on Saturday.

He said: “I would take defeat [if it helps Fulham stay up], then 10 victories [for Chelsea] and the [league] title.

“I’d like the London teams to stay up. I have that emotional connection with Fulham, our neighbours and our rivals. Rivals need each other. It is good for everybody, so hopefully they can keep their place in the division, but we have to try [and beat them].”
