Chelsea have been handed a tough fixture with Atletico Madrid in the Semi-final of the Champions League 2014, while Real Madrid will face current holders Bayern Munich.
Chelsea came back from 3-1 in the away leg against Paris St. Germain, winning 2-0 earlier this week, thanks to goals from Andre Schurrle and Demba Ba, and their reward is to face Europe’s surprise package this season, Atletico Madrid. Atletico are current league leaders in Spain, and reached the semi-finals by knocking out fellow La Liga side Barcelona, with a 1-0, Koke scoring to make up for the missing Diego Costa. The second-leg will be played at Stamford Bridge, as was the case against PSG.
Real Madrid meanwhile will face current Champions League holders Bayern Munich, who knocked Manchester United out in the quarter-finals. Gareth Bale and co. will play the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
There seems to be added spice to the fixture as the Blues were under the impression that on loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, would only be able to play if Atletico paid £5m – it appears today that UEFA have ruled this out as an option.
