Stoke City will be looking to move to within three points of mid-table rivals Newcastle by condemning the Magpies to a fourth consecutive defeat.
Manager Mark Hughes was disappointed with his Stoke side’s showing at Chelsea in their previous game, particularly as they arrived at Stamford Bridge off the back of three straight wins. Throughout the season, however, the club’s home record has been consistently terrific, and having already reached the 40-point mark, the target now will be to beat their record Premier League total of 47.
It has been a difficult few weeks for Newcastle, who have not been resting easily despite lying in the security of ninth place. Defeat to Manchester United was their third in succession in a terrible run which has seen them concede 11 goals without reply and appear almost non-existent as an attacking threat with Loic Remy absent with an injury which also keeps him out of this trip.
Charlie Adam should be fit for Stoke despite suffering a broken nose in training. Stephen Ireland returns after illness, but Oussama Assaidi and Robert Huth are still sidelined.
Besides Remy, Newcastle are still without Mathieu Debuchy, Gabriel Obertan, Moussa Sissoko, Sammy Ameobi and Ryan Taylor, while Tim Krul is doubtful.
