Martinez extends Everton stay

Roberto Martinez has been rewarded for a successful first season at Goodison Park with a new five-year contract, Sky Sports has confirmed.

Under the Spaniard’s guidance, the Toffees finished fifth place, registering their highest points total since the inception of the Premier League in 1992 and qualifying for the Europa League in the process.

This success has only gone to further the reputation of Martinez, widely touted as one of the best of the younger generation of European bosses. He initially made his name with Swansea and Wigan, clubs he had also served with distinction as a player, guiding the Swans to the League One championship, and memorably winning the FA Cup as Latics’ boss.

After replacing David Moyes on Merseyside, he dispelled any doubts over whether he could handle the step up to a big club, masterminding an impressive 21 Premier League victories.

His new deal runs until the end of the 2018/19 season, demonstrating the commitment that both parties feel towards each other. Martinez expressed his happiness on signing, saying: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to make a further commitment to Everton. I loved my first season at the club.”

Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright was also full of praise for his manager. “In many commentators’ eyes, Roberto Martinez is the best young manager in Europe. We agree,” said Kenwright. “He took on an unfamiliar challenge for most managers; to take something really good and make it even better.”

Kenwright also let it be known they were prepared to do what it takes to back Martinez. “We support and provide him with everything at our disposal. We commit to our managers, and we’re immensely pleased that Roberto has committed to us,” he confirmed.

Martinez is currently undertaking media work at the World Cup in Brazil, where he is also rumoured to be scouting potential transfer targets. In particular Dutch trio Jeremain Lens, Bruno Martins Indi and Stefan de Vrij are rumoured by The Liverpool Echo to be on Martinez’s radar.
