Spanish giants Barcelona have followed up reported interest in Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen with what is believed to be a £10m bid for the player, according to Sky
It had been thought that rivals Manchester United were in pole position to make a move for the Belgian – who has fallen out of favour at the Emirates Stadium largely thanks to the blossoming partnership of Per Mertesaker and Laurent Koscielny, but it is Barcelona who have made their move.
The 28-year-old is entering the last year of his contract and manager Arsene Wenger refused to rule out a move away for the centre back after stating he could not guarantee the player first team football, having started just seven league games last term.
Both United and Barcelona are looking to strengthen defensive options after key figures left from the clubs – Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand have left United while Carlos Puyol retired from football at the end of last season.
And with speculation increasing over Vermaelen’s future it is the Catalan giants that have made the first move.
