Aston Villa have offered £5m to Liverpool for striker Rickie Lambert as the Premier League’s lowest scorers seek to increase their goal threat, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
The Reds are said to have fended off interest in England international Lambert throughout transfer deadline day with a number of loan requests from fellow top-flight teams, but the Midlands club are interested in a permanent deal for the former Southampton striker.
Lambert, born in Kirkby, Merseyside, has featured 24 times for Brendan Rodgers, scoring three goals, having netted 117 times in 235 appearances for the Saints. Should he make the switch from Anfield to Villa Park it would be on the basis that he plays more often than he has done with his current employers.
Villa have managed only 11 goals in their 23 league games so far this season, almost half as many as the next lowers scorers West Bromwich Albion. Paul Lambert’s side were on Sunday beaten 5-0 by Arsenal and set a new record for goalless games in the process.
