Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata scored two goals, as the Red Devils did the league double against fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield, which also saw captain Steven Gerrard sent off in his last derby game against United, reports
Manchester United started strongly, and took little time to make their dominance count. Juan Mata, who has been underused at times this season, cut inside from the right flank, and coolly finished past the onrushing Simon Mignolet.
Liverpool were making mistakes all over the pitch, and United will have felt they should have doubled their lead in the first-half as a result.
The Reds almost made United for their missed chances, with Daniel Sturridge setting up Adam Lallana for a close range chance, but the former Southampton midfielder side-footed his effort wide of the post.
After the break, Steven Gerrard was sent off less than a minute after his introduction which gave Liverpool a mountain to climb.
Manchester United eventually doubled their lead in the second-half too, with the impressive Juan Mata scoring a brilliant acrobatic volley to all but seal victory.
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge pulled a goal back to threaten a revival, but it never came, and United took a big step to achieving a top-four finish.
