Sportiello welcomes Liverpool link

Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello has welcomed being mentioned in connection with a move to Liverpool, Sky Sports has reported, although he insists he is happy in Serie A and isn’t looking for a move to the Premier League.

It has been suggested in Italy that the Reds are monitoring the progress of the 22-year-old, Brendan Rodgers’ side said to be among Sportiello’s many suitors. Sportiello began his career at Atalanta, progressing through the youth system at the Bergamo club, before moves to Seregno and Poggibonsi. He returned to Atalanta in 2012 and had a loan spell at Carpi, breaking into the first team at his parent club this season after a handful of appearances in the 2013-14 campaign.

Sportiello has thus far played 26 times for the Nerazzurri, who are 17th in the table, a place and four points clear of the bottom three ahead of their weekend game against Udinese, and told a local newspaper that he is content to stay at his current club, even in light of interest from Merseyside.

“Liverpool are definitely a great club,” Sportiello said. “We are talking about one of the top clubs in the world. However, I am happy to be here,” he continued. “This is my first year as a starter and I recently signed a new contract with Atalanta. My life has changed in a few months.”
