Chelsea line up Everton star as Varane alternative

Chelsea will turn to Everton’s John Stones if they fail in their attempts to sign prime defensive target Raphael Varane this summer, according to the London Evening Standard.

Real Madrid starlet Varane is admired considerably by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who managed him at the Bernabeu as he made his break into the Spanish giants’ starting XI. Mourinho has been constantly rumoured to be intent on signing Varane since he returned to Chelsea in 2013.

The France international is likely to command a huge transfer fee, particularly having proved his worth during a more extended role in the team in recent months, while his contract does not run out until the summer of 2020.

Should the Blues prove unsuccessful, they will turn to Stones, who has won many admirers in his time at Everton since joining from Barnsley in January 2013. He has established himself as a first-team regular under Roberto Martinez and has earned four senior England caps to go with his status as one of the country’s most highly rated young defenders.

Everton are unlikely to want to sell Stones, who they see as a key part of their long-term future plans. But if the 20-year-old was to move to West London, he would have to compete with John Terry, Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma for a place in the team.
