Man City star James Milner will quit the Etihad Stadium this summer and is set to join Liverpool on a free transfer deal according to the Daily
The experienced England international has turned down the offer of a new Man City contract and will apparently snub Arsenal for a move to Anfield.
The Daily Mirror claims that the relatively short-distance move to Merseyside is a prime reason for Milner’s willingness to join Liverpool.
Brendan Rodgers will see Steven Gerrard leave in the summer and Milner may provide a very useful replacement and the fact that the former Leeds United, Aston Villa and Newcastle United man can ply his trade in numerous positions will help provide more strength in depth for the Liverpool boss.
Milner can operate in a central midfield role as well as on the flanks and has even been used in a striking role by Manuel Pellegrini this season, such is his versatility.
Having seen his chances at Man City limited over recent seasons, winning just 16 Premier League starts this term, it’s perhaps not surprising that Milner would look to leave for a better shot at regular action at this crucial point in his career.
Liverpool are ready to make Milner one of their top earners, with a reported £100k a week deal being offered, and the fact that Rodgers can bring in such a quality player on a free transfer deal represents a very cost effective transfer for the Anfield side.
Rodgers may struggle to secure big name signings this summer as they do not have the ‘carrot’ of Champions League to offer and as such the Northern Irishman will have to be at his very best to land players who can significantly improve his squad.
Liverpool spent vast sums on players last summer and on the whole the additions Rodgers made proved unable to make an impact in their first season at the club.
With Milner Liverpool will get a talented campaigner with a huge amount of Premier League experience and perhaps most importantly they’ll be getting a player with a point to prove.
