Luke Shaw’s dream of representing England in the under 21 European Championships with in the summer appear to be over after his Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has insisted that he will not allow the defender to be picked in the squad, according to the Daily
The 19-year-old has seen his debut season disrupted by various injuries and had to be stretchered off in United’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last weekend on what was only his 16th league appearance of the campaign.
Shaw, who signed for a reported £27million (via the BBC) from Southampton last summer, is set to miss the Red Devils game against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon after van Gaal revealed to the club’s official website that the defender has not recovered from the injury sustained against the Eagles.
The Dutch manager is wary about letting the youngster participate in the tournament this summer and has warned Gareth Southgate not to pick Shaw in the squad:
“When he is not playing for Manchester he cannot play for other teams either.” van Gaal said.
“Because he needs that rest. He over-crossed his limits and that’s why.”
“He’s 19 years old – what can you expect? We have to protect him and I hope that the coach of Under 21s (Southgate) is understandable of that reason.” he added.
