Both players had been reported as key targets for the Gunners this summer as a new central midfielder had been billed as a top priority for Arsene Wenger during the January transfer window.

However, following the emergence of Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla in the middle of the park towards the end of a successful campaign that was capped off with an FA Cup win, Wenger has had a rethink about spending £25m on wither player, especially when he has the likes of ack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky all vying for game time.

But despite that, the London Evening Standard claim that Wenger is still interested in signing Sporting Lisbon starlet William Carvalho.
