Arsene Wenger may be about to miss out on one of his main transfer targets of the summer, as Porto striker Jackson Martinez has reportedly agreed to join AC Milan.

According to The Guardian, the Colombian – who is currently away with the national squad at the Copa America – will take part in a medical next week after the Rossoneri activated his €35m release clause, the Portuguese side’s president has confirmed.
“Before going on holiday Jackson announced he wanted to leave. The €35m clause is not up for debate and must be paid. I learned just now that Jackson has chosen Milan. This is what he wants, the destination is irrelevant as far as I am concerned. I want him to be happy,” Pinto da Costa is quoted as saying.
The Guardian report that the 28-year-old had been linked with a move to the Emirates as Wenger tries to bolster his attacking options as the Gunners attempt to build on the promising season they enjoyed last time out.
While Olivier Giroud was prolific for much of the campaign, he was absent due to injuries for the early part of the season, and experienced a barren goalscoring spell that began in early April, and only ended when he completed the scoring in last month’s FA Cup final.
Meanwhile, Martinez was consistent throughout, scoring 21 times in the top flight, and hitting another seven goals in the Champions League. His form in continental competition would have arguably been the more impressive statistic to Wenger, especially as the Emirates side have struggled to make an impression in the knockout rounds of the competition in recent years.
Nevertheless, it appears that he will soon be signing for a team that will not be playing any European football next year, and Arsenal will have to divert their attention elsewhere.
