Southampton full-back Nathaniel Clyne is set to become Liverpool’s sixth signing of a hectic summer, as he prepares to have a medical later today.
According to the Daily Mirror, the 24-year-old will sign a five-year deal at Anfield to complete his £12.5m move to Merseyside.
As mentioned, the England international will follow James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez, and Roberto Firmino through the door during this busy window for Brendan Rodgers. Arguably however, it was Clyne’s acquisition that was the most important.
While Firmino may be the kind of marquee signing that Reds fans were craving after last season, Glen Johnson’s departure and Jon Flanagan’s prolonged injury concerns meant that finding a new full-back should have been high on Rodgers’ to-do list.
In Clyne, they have one of the most exciting defenders in the country currently. While his defending is solid, he is also confident to get down the line and offer support in attack. His energy will allow the likes of Firmino and Philippe Coutinho to play predominantly down the middle where they can have the most influence.
