Wayne Rooney bagged a late goal to put England 3-2 ahead in their European Championship qualifier with Slovenia, and in the process draw level with Gary Lineker in the all-time goalscoring charts.
A challenge from one of the home defenders inadvertently played the ball into the unmarked skipper’s path some 20 yards from goal. And he managed to fool Samir Handanovic and tuck his effort into the bottom corner.
The goal had only come after Roy Hodgson’s men had been given an almighty scare by the Slovenians. After Jack Wilshere had scored two stunning strikes to turn the game on its head – following Milivoje Novakovic’s opener – the home side had found an equaliser of their own, thanks to an excellent header late on from former Sheffield Wednesday man Nejc Pecnik. It looked as if England were set to be frustrated.
And Rooney himself would have carried the most frustration, having squandered several glorious chances to put the game beyond doubt. However, he made sure that he took his final chance.
