Arsenal planning bid for Bayern Munich striker as they prepare to miss out on Karim Benzema

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is desperate to land a new striker this summer, even if their new man is not Karim Benzema.

According to the Daily Star, the Real Madrid man is Wenger’s number one target, and he’s willing to spend £35m to get a deal across the line.

However, the Star suggest that Los Blancos want to hold onto the 27-year-old, leaving Wenger to pursue other options.

One such target, the Star report, is Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski, who is also wanted by Premier League rivals Manchester United.

The Poland international is considered to have enjoyed a mixed season at the Allianz Arena, despite the fact that he still managed 17 goals in just 31 Bundesliga games since his move from Borussia Dortmund.

Should he move to north London, he is likely to play in a similar system to the one that Pep Guardiola has often used with the Bavarian side, with creative players working around him, and often making chances for themselves. However, he has proved that he is always there to finish off the opportunities when they come his way.

It seems unlikely that Guardiola would be happy to lose the 26-year-old however, meaning that it may take a huge offer if Wenger wants to land the kind of forward that is going to improve the squad they already have.
