Chelsea could be on the verge of completing a deal for Barcelona winger Pedro, after it was reported that they had triggered the Spaniard’s release clause.
According to the Metro, the 27-year-old was attracting the interest of Manchester United, Liverpool, and Juventus, as well as the Blues, despite only signing a new contract at the Nou Camp at the start of the summer.
And the Metro suggest that it is Jose Mourinho’s men that have won the chase for the player, after they triggered his £22m release clause. He is expected to complete a move to Stamford Bridge next week, with a four-year deal likely to be signed.
Considering the options Mourinho has at his disposal, it is something of a surprise that he has gone after another winger. Eden Hazard was the best player in the Premier League last year, and he was expertly supported by the likes of Willian and Oscar. Meanwhile, the futures of Mohamed Salah and Juan Cuadrado remain uncertain (via Daily Mail).
While Pedro is an exciting player, and is arguably a certainty – along with Hazard – to be considered as one of the three that sit just behind the striker, the money they will potentially spend on him could surely be invested in areas that require more attention.
However, it seems to be part of Mourinho’s way that he likes to prove that he can get the very best out of player that have not lived up to expectation. That is arguably the reason they signed Radamel Falcao on loan, despite his torrid year at Old Trafford, and may be the reason that he wants to be the man that gives Pedro the freedom to finally show what he is capable of.
