Chelsea are facing the prospect of heading into the Community Shield meeting with Arsenal this weekend without key first team men Gary Cahill and Diego Costa, according to the Daily
The annual curtain raiser for the Premier League is back on Sunday but the Blues face the prospect of going into the game without the duo, who both picked up injuries during the club’s 2-2 clash with Barcelona on Tuesday night in Washington DC.
Spanish international, Costa, is believed to have aggravated an old hamstring complaint, while it is feared that Cahill has sustained a broken nose.
“Cahill has a chance of a broken nose, maybe yes, maybe no,” Mourinho said.
“If he’s not perfect, he goes tomorrow to make a mask to be ready to play on Sunday.
“Diego felt a little thing in his hamstring. We believe just a feeling, no more than that, but we have to wait.”
The game ended at a stalemate after 90 minutes, but Chelsea came out 4-2 on top in the resulting penalty shootout (via official website).
The clash with Barca brings their American adventure to an end – a tour saw them chalk up a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint Germain and a shock 4-2 defeat to MLS outfit New York Red Bulls.
The news of Costa’s absence could pave the way for Radamel Falcao to grab a starting berth and make a strong case for himself ahead of the new campaign, which kicks off with a clash at home to Swansea on August 8.
