Manchester United reportedly in talks over move for Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette

Manchester United could be about to land one of Europe’s most highly sought-after forwards, after the Daily Express reported that talks between the Premier League side and Lyon are set to begin over Alexandre Lacazette. However, the Frenchman is just one of several strikers that have been linked with an Old Trafford switch this summer.

According to the Metro, Louis van Gaal had been keen on both Edinson Cavani and Robert Lewandowski in this window, while another Metro report suggested that the Pole’s Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Muller was also being monitored. The Metro suggest that the Dutchman has been put off the former pair due to their eye-watering price tags.

That should be less of a problem for Lacazette, as the Daily Star reported last month that he had been offered to the interested clubs for as little as £21m, which, even if Lyon decide to drive the price up, will surely be considerably less than the £69.6m bid they have just submitted for Muller (via Metro).

While the German will offer more versatility in terms of where he can play in the side, there have been few players as ruthless in front of goal as Lacazette in the last year. He scored 27 goals in just 33 games, and finished as the French top flight’s leading goalscorer.

With Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao now off the books, van Gaal has very few options to choose from ahead of the new Premier League campaign. If he is unable to add a new signing in the next few weeks, he faces the possibility of going into the new season with just Javier Hernandez – who has previously been told he can leave (via Manchester Evening News) – and James Wilson, to play alongside Wayne Rooney.

However, while last season’s efforts – as well as the possible fees – would suggest Lacazette is the safer choice if van Gaal is only looking to bring in one more attacking option, it would still be a gamble to put the Red Devils’ hopes of ascending back into the title picture in the hands of someone who has enjoyed just one incredible campaign. However, it may be the risk that defines van Gaal’s time in the north-west.
