The Slovakian international had just 12 months left to run on his current deal, and looked to be heading for the exit door after slamming the club’s previous offer as ‘unacceptable’.

However, it now appears that fresh terms have been agreed and the 30-year-old will be donning the Red shirt until 2018, which will take him up to a decade of service having joined from Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg back in 2013.

Skrtel was one of the club’s more consistent performers at the back last season, putting defensive partner Dejan Lovren to shame for his own abject performances following his £20m move from Southampton over the summer of 2014.

He now follows fellow centre-back Kolo Toure in committing his future to the club. The Ivorian penned a one-year extension earlier this summer.
