Southampton have announced their second departure of the day, as the club’s record signing Dani Osvaldo has been released.
The announcement coming out of the south coast side comes hours after Nathaniel Clyne completed his £12.5m move to Liverpool (via BBC Sport). However, it is likely that the England international will leave St Mary’s with many more better wishes than his former teammate.
The Italian failed to endear himself to Saints fans during his time in the Premier League. Although he scored a sumptuous goal against Manchester City, he failed to hit the heights that he had previously managed at Roma. He would go on to score just three goals in 13 appearances, before an incident on the training ground effectively ended his Southampton career 18 months before it was finally confirmed.
The Southern Daily Echo report that the 29-year-old was involved in a bust-up with Jose Fonte, which ended with the striker head-butting his teammate. He would not play for the club again.
Loan spells at Juventus, Inter Milan, and Boca Juniors followed. However, the Echo report that their inability to shift him – and recoup some of the £14.6m they spent on him – has seen the two parties mutually agree to end his contract two years early, leaving Osvaldo to add his name to the pantheon of Premier League flops.
