Arsenal have been put on alert after Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain rejected a new contract at Stadio San Paolo, according to the Telegraph.
Arsene Wenger’s primary striker target appears to be the Argentinian’s former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema, but Los Blancos’ insistence that the Frenchman will not be leaving may see Wenger switch his attention to his former target (via Telegraph).
The Telegraph report that the 27-year-old was close to moving to the Emirates in 2013, but instead opted for the Serie A side. But, it appears that he may now be willing to make the Premier League switch.
Despite finishing with 18 goals in the top flight, he was unable to inspire the club to a position from which they would qualify for the Champions League. And with Juventus’ stranglehold on the Scudetto over the past few years, it seems like he will not be winning any league titles in the near future.
Meanwhile, there is a feeling – especially since their Community Shield victory – that the Gunners are not far away from mounting a very serious title challenge, and it could be this year. Having a player like Higuain would strengthen their chances even further.
