Chelsea closing in on £20m deal for Germany centre-back and John Stones alternative

Chelsea are reportedly closing in on a £20m deal to sign Stuttgart centre-back Antonio Rudiger, according to the Metro.

The 22-year-old had been close to sealing a loan move to Roma – who have also been keen on Blues defender Kurt Zouma (via Daily Mirror) following the sale of Alessio Romagnoli – but that deal has now fallen through, the Metro report.

The Premier League champions’ frustrations over the lack of a deal for Everton’s John Stones has seen them switch their attention to the Germany international, and now it appears that a move may be close (via Metro).

Like Stones, Rudiger is expected to have a very bright future, having already become a stalwart of Stuttgart’s side, as well as recently establishing himself as part of the very young and exciting squad at Joachim Low’s disposal.

With John Terry enjoying the twilight of his career, the need to find a promising centre-back even slightly capable of filling the void that the captain will leave behind has become a huge priority.
