Chelsea plan £26m bid to beat Arsenal to signing of Jose Callejon

Chelsea are willing to spend as much as £26m in their attempts to land Napoli winger Jose Callejon, and keep him away from Arsenal, according to the Metro.

The Metro report that the Premier League champions had initially made a bid worth £15.5m for the 28-year-old, but that was trumped by the Gunners.

With Arsene Wenger’s men making a late surge for the title last year, Jose Mourinho is perhaps worried that the acquisition of the former Real Madrid man may be the final piece in the jigsaw that allows the Emirates outfit to mount a season-long charge for the top flight crown.

That concern appears to have convinced the Portuguese to make a substantial improvement on his first offer, possibly hoping that Wenger feels less certain about Callejon’s ability and decides to leave the path clear for the Stamford Bridge side.

Although he does not provide many assists for a winger – with only three in Serie A last season – the Spaniard is able to find the back of the net, which will be valuable for both interested parties as they usually opt to play with a lone forward.
