Liverpool target’s Real Madrid departure now ‘inevitable’

Liverpool appear to be closing in on the signing of Real Madrid holding midfielder Asier Illarramendi, after Mundo Deportivo claimed that it was ‘inevitable’ that he would be leaving the Bernabeu this summer, according to the Metro.

The 25-year-old’s chances of first-team football for Rafa Benitez’s side appeared to have suffered a massive setback, after the Guardian claimed that Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic was close to agreeing a €32m move to Los Blancos.

That could tempt the Spaniard to make a switch to Anfield, with the Metro claiming that the Reds are leading the charge for his signature.

The former Real Sociedad man is being touted as the perfect replacement for Lucas. The Brazilian has two years left on his contract on Merseyside, but the club are willing to listen to offers for him after he appeared to fall out of favour with Brendan Rodgers (via Liverpool Echo).

However, Reds fans will argue that the signing of Illarramendi may be unnecessary. There seems to be a real desire to see Emre Can used in his best position after a year of being shifted around to fill in where necessary, and the Real Madrid man’s arrival would likely scupper that.
