Man United make approach for Southampton man as Pedro heads elsewhere

Manchester United could be about to complete one of the more surprising moves of the summer, after the Daily Telegraph reported that they had been in contact with Southampton about a possible deal for Sadio Mane.

The Telegraph report that their approach was made last week, but there is little indication at this stage as to how far, or well, talks have gone.

The Red Devils’ desire to land the 23-year-old may have increased in recent days, after it became apparent that former target Pedro is set to complete a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea (via Telegraph).

While the Senegal international has not won the accolades that the Barcelona man has, there is little question that he was one of the most exciting players in the top flight last year.

He arrived on the south coast in the wake of the exodus that led many to tip the Saints for relegation. And while he made his name with Red Bull Salzburg as a striker – and achieved a strike-rate of just under a goal every two games – Ronald Koeman often deployed him as a winger.

Nevertheless, he displayed that those goalscoring instincts had not disappeared, bagging ten strikes in the top flight, and breaking the record for the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history during the 6-1 thrashing of Aston Villa.

The tremendous year he enjoyed has brought him to the attention of Louis van Gaal, who desperately needs to add more fire power in front of goal, now it has become apparent that Pedro is heading to Stamford Bridge rather than Old Trafford.
