Man United may have to pay £182m if they want to sign Neymar as Barcelona prepare new contract

Manchester United’s interest in Barcelona star Neymar appears to have concerned the Catalan giants enough that they are now preparing a new deal for the 23-year-old, according to the Daily Express.

The Red Devils begun to consider pulling off an audacious deal for the forward after they missed out on his former teammate Pedro, the Express report. And the Old Trafford outfit were not only willing to trigger his release clause with a staggering bid of £140m, but also offer the playmaker a contract that would see him pocket £300,000 a week (via Express).

While there is little indication about whether Neymar would be willing to make the move to the Premier League, it appears that the speculation has persuaded the La Liga champions to try and make United’s task much more challenging.

The Express report that they will offer the Brazil captain a new deal worth £6.6m per year, but will also increase his release clause to an eye-watering £182m.

Given that a potential move would break the world record for a transfer fee by just short of £100m (via BBC Sport), it would be a huge gamble on United’s part to make such an offer.

If Neymar followed in the footsteps of Angel Di Maria, and struggled to make the desired impact, it is almost a given that the Red Devils would make a monumental loss on the player if they tried to sell him on.
